On December 8, 1856,Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart and four sister companions arrived in the Washington Territory, at what is now Vancouver, Wash. Since then, hundreds of of Providence have continued their legacy of compassion, courage and caring.
As of 2016, the sisters have been in the West for 160 years.
On December 8, 2006, we began a yearlong celebration of all of their many contributions to education, health care and social services in the West.
Sisters of Providence, Providence Associates and Providence-sponsored ministries throughout Mother Joseph Province launched the year of celebration with prayer services that continued monthly until the actual anniversary date in December 2006. In addition, three major events were held.
We trust you will find this look back into our early history as fascinating as we do.
