A consequential tenure in service to Providence St. Joseph Health has come to an end for Dougal Hewitt, who is pursuing a new career opportunity.
Hewitt made a significant impact as chief mission and sponsorship officer for the health care ministry. After joining the health system in 2018, he was a leading force in many mission-driven endeavors, including the creation of the Mission Leadership Institute. The program educates caregivers on the Sisters’ lasting impact on the health system and guides them in making deep connections with the ministry’s mission to serve all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.
In 2019, Hewitt was on hand at the Mother House in Montreal for the 175th anniversary of the founding of Sisters of Providence. “There was a wonderful sense of hospitality and inclusivity that resonated throughout all of the events and activities,” he said. “People of many different backgrounds, cultures and traditions, and speaking many different languages, all came together and welcomed one another.”
Hewitt also accompanied a group of the Congregation’s Sponsors during their official visit to the Vatican for a report on the state and stewardship of the health system in 2024. Sr. Barbara Schamber, SP, and Sr. Maggie Pastro, SP, were also on hand for the international visit.
During a farewell ceremony at Saint Joseph Residence on December 15, 2025, Hewitt was presented with a statuette of Mother Joseph in honor of his service and dedication to the Sisters of Providence.
“I will continue to hold the Sisters and our healing ministry in my prayers,” said Hewitt.
