Hundreds Celebrate Mount St. Vincent’s Centennial Anniversary

Sisters, sponsors, health care executives, residences and friends celebrated the 100th anniversary of the opening of Providence Mount St. Vincent in January.  Archbishop Paul Etienne celebrated Mass to kick off a series of events to commemorate the centennial.

Now a “living-care community” for older adults in West Seattle, the Mount – as it is affectionally known – was opened in 1924 as the Sisters relocated their provincial administration, infirmary and novitiate from Providence Academy in Vancouver.  The Sisters lived on the premises where they administered the facility and cared for the older residents.

The Mount has been known for its excellent and compassionate care, community outreach and creativity.  In the 1990s, its Intergenerational Learning Center opened for children of employees and the community.  The program, bringing children together with residents, brings extra joy, new relationships and meaning to the daily lives of children and residents.  The program received nationwide media attention for its unique approach.
